Acupuncture for Stress and Anxiety

Acupuncture and Stress or Anxiety

A significant proportion of the population suffer from stress and anxiety each year. Many people are familiar with symptoms such as extreme fatigue, mood swings, poor sleep patterns, and depression. Acupuncture is believed to rebalance the nervous system by causing the release of neurochemicals in the brain resulting in biochemical changes in the body. Over time, these biochemical changes promote longterm recovery resulting in better physical and emotional well-being.

Research has shown that acupuncture treatment may specifically benefit anxiety disorders and symptoms of anxiety by acting on areas of the brain known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the 'analytical' brain, which is responsible for anxiety and worry. In regulating levels of neurotransmitters and hormones such as serotonin and noradrenaline, the brain's mood chemistry may be altered to help combat negative states. Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, while acupuncture can trigger the opposing parasympathetic nervous system, which initiates the relaxation response. In addition, research suggests that acupuncture may reverse  biochemical changes, such as  levels of inflammatory cytokines that are associated with anxiety.
